Stability and a long-lasting peace necessitate robust security assurances, according to the Estonian Prime Minister.

In a significant development, European leaders and Ukraine's representatives gathered in Washington for a crucial meeting on a specific Monday, expressing unwavering support for Ukraine amid ongoing geopolitical tensions[1]. The focus of the discussions was the provision of strong security guarantees to help Ukraine maintain its sovereignty and deter further aggression.

Margus Tsahkna, Estonian Minister of Foreign Affairs, led the Ukrainian delegation. He emphasized the urgency for an agreement on security guarantees to form the basis of peace negotiations[1]. Tsahkna also highlighted the need for guarantees that include a commitment to defending Ukraine with real military capabilities if aggression recurs.

The security architecture being proposed includes a large, standing Ukrainian military equipped with modern weaponry. NATO's principle of mutual defense, while not formally covering Ukraine, continues to be a foundational element in discussions. NATO plays a critical role by coordinating military aid, strengthening regional deterrence, and offering a security umbrella to neighboring NATO members, indirectly supporting Ukraine's defense[1].

Tsahkna reiterated the importance of the European Union's role in supporting Ukraine. He suggested that security guarantees and European Union membership can ensure Ukraine's economic sustainability and provide political stability[1]. The European Union was urged to make quick progress with the 19th sanctions package to demonstrate its commitment.

The meeting was characterized by a display of unity and unwavering support for Ukraine. Europe and the United States shared a common understanding of the need for strong security guarantees. The foreign minister expressed the need to continue supporting Ukraine and to raise the cost of aggression.

According to Tsahkna, NATO's collective defense is considered the best security guarantee, but until that point is reached, other guarantees need to be established[1]. The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to work swiftly to establish security guarantees for Ukraine, emphasizing the need to contain an aggressive Russia.
