St. Pauli's Slapstick Goalkeeping Moment: "It's Part of the Game"
34-year-old FC St. Pauli's keeper, Sascha Burchert, took the slapstick moment in stride after his blunder during the DFB Cup match against FC 08 Homburg. The second-division leaders won 4-1, but Burchert's mistake was hard to overlook. With a 1-0 lead in the 28th minute, a slight unevenness in the pitch led to a ball bouncing towards the goal as Burchert attempted to clear it. Markus Mendler, Homburg's striker, smelled an opportunity and squeezed between Burchert and the goal, equalizing the score.
Burchert admitted his error: "I might have solved a few too many situations with one contact. Perhaps two contacts could have been better." Burchert's teammate, Marcel Hartel, defended his goalkeeper, stating, "No reproach – a mistake in the box."
Burchert's mistake was one of many memorable moments in the game, with Hauke Wahl, Elias Saad, Marcel Hartel, and Johannes Eggestein scoring for St. Pauli, earning them €1.7 million and a spot in the quarterfinals.
HSV's Daniel Heuer-Fernandes, a teammate of Burchert in the city derby against St. Pauli, suffered a similar fumble in the Millerntor a few days earlier. A short kick by HSV's Stephan Ambrosius and Guilherme Ramos saw the ball bounce in front of Heuer-Fernandes, who tried to clear it out of the penalty area but only managed to score an own goal.
Despite the setbacks, both goalkeepers remained focused on their responsibilities, with Burchert playing a crucial role in preventing Homburg from equalizing later in the game. The incident was only a minor setback for St. Pauli, who continued their impressive run in the tournament, showcasing their resilience and determination.
