Goalkeeper Blunder in Crisis Showdown: St. Pauli Defeats Werder - St. Pauli stuns Werder Bremen with 2-1 win in relegation showdown

FC St. Pauli secured a vital 2-1 win over Werder Bremen in a tense Bundesliga relegation clash. The match, played before a packed Millerntor-Stadion, saw the hosts turn dominance into defeat thanks to a costly error from Bremen's goalkeeper.

Thioune's side, still searching for their first league win under the new coach, suffered a third straight loss and extended their winless run to 13 games.

Werder Bremen entered the game with a weakened defence. Injuries sidelined left-back Felix Agu and centre-backs Amos Pieper and Karim Coulibaly, leaving gaps at the back. Meanwhile, St. Pauli welcomed back Hauke Wahl and Eric Smith after both recovered from minor knocks.

The visitors controlled the first half but struggled to break down a stubborn St. Pauli defence. Despite creating chances, Bremen failed to find the net, continuing a worrying trend under new manager Daniel Thioune. His first three league games had all ended without a goal—until Jovan Milošević finally scored in this match.

The second half took a dramatic turn when Bremen goalkeeper Mio Backhaus made a critical mistake. His error gifted St. Pauli their opening goal, shifting momentum firmly in the hosts' favour. Hauke Wahl and Joel Chima Fujita capitalised, putting St. Pauli 2-0 ahead before Milošević pulled one back. The late effort was not enough to prevent another Bremen defeat.

Thioune's difficult start continued, with his team now winless since February. His first match in charge had ended in a narrow 0-1 loss to SC Freiburg, and this latest setback deepened the crisis.

St. Pauli's victory moves them clear of the relegation zone, while Werder Bremen remain in serious trouble. The defeat leaves Thioune's side rooted near the bottom, with their winless streak stretching back over three months. A turnaround is urgently needed if they are to avoid the drop.
