St. Pauli's Coach Hürzeler and the Contract Glimmer
Andreas Bornemann, St. Pauli's sporting director, cranked up the pressure in contract talks with Fabian Hürzeler on Monday. "It's beneficial for everyone to be clear," said Bornemann, commenting on the intimate discussions between the coach and his close circle. "Fabian needs to clarify his career vision, his goals with those he's deeply connected to."
According to media reports, Hürzeler's deal with the promotion hopefuls ends this season. Although they enjoyed sporting success together, St. Pauli and their star coach have yet to settle on a contract extension.
Bornemann insisted, however, that their target remains to extend their collaboration. Hürzeler ascended to head coach in December 2022, when St. Pauli sat in 15th place. He steered the club to a remarkable fifth place with a spectacular second half and helped transition St. Pauli into a promotion-chasing powerhouse, boasting an unbeaten first half of the season.
"Fabian has proved to be a blessing for St. Pauli," emphatically stated Bornemann. "I think it's safe to say that we both consider ourselves fortunate."
Hürzeler joined the media fray on Monday as well, weighing in on the contract talks. "It's never about recognition, status, or material riches for me," he mentioned. "At present, my primary focus remains personal development – for ourselves, the players, the club – and, of course, for me, too."
During his time at St. Pauli, Hürzeler has become well-acquainted with what the club offers, and Bornemann was optimistic about their future prospects. "I have no doubt that St. Pauli can still be an attractive destination for Fabian in his next chapter."
