Obituary: Albrecht Herold, Prominent German Politician and St. Ingbert's Honorary Citizen, Passes Away at 95

Albrecht Herold, a distinguished figure in German politics and a beloved resident of St. Ingbert, passed away in early July 2025 at the age of 95.

Herold, who was a member of the Landtag of Saarland, had shaped the political and social life in Saarland and his hometown St. Ingbert for decades. His significant contributions to the region will be remembered and honoured.

Herold was a founding member of the housing cooperative on the Alte Schmelz and was bestowed the title of honorary citizen of St. Ingbert. His dedication to the town was further demonstrated by his role as a trade unionist.

Mayor Dr. Ulli Meyer has announced a public memorial event for Herold, to be held at the town hall in the fall. Details about the event are yet to be disclosed. The funeral for Herold will take place on July 24, 2025, at 11 am at the Waldfriedhof St. Ingbert.

In the meantime, the town hall flags in St. Ingbert will be flown at half-mast on July 24, 2025, as a tribute to Herold's life work. The city is also paying tribute to his life's work through the funeral service.

Herold was described as a great social democrat, a great trade unionist, and a great politician. His legacy will undoubtedly continue to inspire future generations.

During the funeral, Deputy Mayor Markus Schmitt will represent the town of St. Ingbert, paying respects to a man who dedicated his life to serving the community.
