The match began with Afghanistan setting a competitive total of 169, aided by Mohammad Nabi's impressive display in the final over, where he struck 5 sixes against Dunith Wellalage. Noor Ali Zadran held the record for the highest individual score in an Asia Cup T20 match for Afghanistan with 63 off 44 balls.

Sri Lanka's top order, led by Mendis, executed the chase perfectly. Kusal Perera, Charith Asalanka, and Kamindu Mendis played attacking cameos around the anchor, ensuring stability in Sri Lanka's batting effort. Mendis anchored the chase with maturity, guiding Sri Lanka to a memorable victory and setting a new record for the highest individual score in a successful run-chase in the Asia Cup T20 history.

This win means Sri Lanka advances to the Super Fours of the Asia Cup 2025, which will take place in Dubai. Interestingly, Kusal Mendis was replaced by Wanindu Hasaranga in Sri Lanka's team during the Super-Four stage after his 74-run knock against Afghanistan.

Shoaib Malik holds the record for the highest individual score in an Asia Cup T20 match for Pakistan with 63 off 49 balls. Pathum Nissanka holds the record for the highest individual score in an Asia Cup T20 match for Sri Lanka with 68 off 44 balls.

Afghanistan's loss in the match confirms their exit from the Asia Cup 2025 tournament. The Asia Cup 2025 continues to deliver exciting cricket, with Sri Lanka and Bangladesh set to face off in Dubai on Saturday, September 20.
