A new conservation fund has launched in Sri Lanka to protect coral reefs and support coastal communities. The CORALL Conservation Trust Fund (CCTF) was announced on World Fisheries Day, 22 November 2025, at Colombo’s Aqua Planet exhibition. Backed by an initial contribution of LKR 97 million (USD 321,000), the fund aims to create lasting change for marine ecosystems and local livelihoods.
The CCTF was established by the Sri Lanka Coral Reef Initiative (SLCRI), a six-year programme running from 2024 to 2030. Its focus lies on three key seascapes: Puttalam, Trincomalee, and Batticaloa Districts. The fund operates as a revolving mechanism, reinvesting revenue back into the same coastal areas where it is generated.
The CCTF’s launch marks a structured effort to secure funding for Sri Lanka’s coral reefs and coastal communities. With clear governance and a revolving fund model, it aims to maintain conservation efforts well beyond the SLCRI’s initial six-year period. The success of this approach will depend on continued collaboration between stakeholders and sustainable reinvestment.
