Sri Lanka All-Rounder Dunith Wellalage to Return to Asia Cup 2025 After Father's Passing

Sri Lanka all-rounder Dunith Wellalage is set to rejoin the squad for the Super Four stage of the Asia Cup 2025, following the sudden passing of his father, Suranga Wellalage, due to a heart attack.

Wellalage was informed of his father's death after the Sri Lanka's Group B match against Afghanistan in Lahore. The cricketing community, including former captain Lasith Malinga, has expressed their condolences to Wellalage on social media. Afghanistan veteran Mohammad Nabi also extended his sympathies to Wellalage and his family.

Wellalage played a key role in Sri Lanka's six-wicket win over Afghanistan, claiming the wicket of opener Ibrahim Zadran in his four-over spell despite conceding 49 runs. This was Wellalage's fifth appearance in T20 Internationals.

Sri Lanka Cricket announced that Wellalage will travel to the UAE tonight accompanied by Team Manager Mahinda Halangode. Wellalage will be available for selection in Sri Lanka's Super Four opener against Bangladesh in the UAE, which begins tomorrow.

The Super Four stage of the Asia Cup 2025 will see Sri Lanka face Bangladesh, India, and Pakistan. The tournament runs from September 9 to 28, 2025.

Wellalage has the time to hold the funeral service for his deceased father after returning to Sri Lanka following the conclusion of the Asia Cup 2025. Therefore, the funeral could be held any time after September 28, 2025.
