SRC Duisburg is ascending to the next level in the league
After a 12-year absence, SRC Duisburg is making a comeback to Germany's top squash league - the Bundesliga. This return marks a significant milestone for the sport in Germany, as it gears up for its Olympic debut in 2028.
The club's renewed focus on competitive squash is evident in their involvement in youth team competitions, such as the U11/U13 international team events, as recently as 2025. This emphasis on developing young talent suggests that SRC Duisburg aims to build a strong, sustainable team foundation.
The past 12 years have seen challenges for the club, but the current goal is to re-establish SRC Duisburg as a competitive force in the league and to foster upcoming players to secure long-term success.
Each Bundesliga division consists of nine teams, with seven teams registered for the 2025/26 season. SRC Duisburg, as the only newcomer in the North division, will face stiff competition from established teams. However, the club cannot be relegated this season.
The Bundesliga divisions are designed for nine teams, and SRC Duisburg will have a bye in the first matchday (September 13). Their first home match will be against 1. Bremer SC at the Sportschule Wedau on September 14.
The club has bolstered its squad with the addition of several players, including homegrown talents Yvo van Ooy and Julian Sonntag, who are expected to get more playing time. They have also recruited Roshan Bharos and René Meijs from future rival SC Hasbergen, as well as Steve Colarussu, Oliver Jones, and Klaus Bücker. The team lineup also includes several established players like Thijs Roukens, Jamal Al-Barwani, and Dirk Siewert.
A mandatory livestream for SRC Duisburg's matches has been announced. All away matches for SRC Duisburg are scheduled in Paderborn, Hasbergen, Bremen, Berlin, and Hamburg twice.
Rainer Westphal, SRC chairman, acknowledges the challenge ahead and the potential for losses, but views the promotion as a reward for the team's efforts. He emphasizes the need to build a strong, sustainable team for the long term.
As SRC Duisburg embarks on this new chapter, the focus is on rebuilding, competing, and creating a lasting impact on the German squash scene.
