Squid Game season 3 features a dramatic alternate ending, drastically altering the narrative

In the final episode of the hit Netflix series "Squid Game", protagonist Gi-hun's fate took an unexpected turn. Instead of surviving and reuniting with his daughter in America, as initially planned, Gi-hun made a selfless sacrifice that left a lasting impression on viewers.

Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk, in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, revealed that the original ending for Gi-hun involved him surviving the games and travelling to the USA. However, Dong-hyuk decided to change the ending, feeling that a more powerful and impactful message would be sent by Gi-hun's sacrifice[1][2][4].

The shift in Gi-hun's fate was influenced by Dong-hyuk's observations of the world and its current state. He felt that the bleak state of the world would resonate more deeply with audiences if Gi-hun died while taking a stand, ultimately sacrificing himself to save another character[1].

In the final episode, Gi-hun throws himself off a ledge to save Player 222, the newborn child of Kim Jun-hee. This selfless act symbolises the sacrifices needed in the current generation for a better future for the next generation[5].

The alternate ending where Player 456, not Gi-hun, survives the games was also considered, but ultimately discarded[3]. The final game of "Squid Game" was designed to convey a powerful and impactful message to the world, reflecting a 'world [that] seems to be headed for the worst'[6].

Rumours of a US version of "Squid Game" have been circulating, but as of now, Netflix has not confirmed or denied these reports[7]. The unexpected ending of "Squid Game" has certainly left a lasting impact, with fans still discussing and analyzing the series months after its release.
