Spurs Target Timo Werner for Potential Transfer

Timo Werner Bids Farewell to Tottenham Hotspur as Club Declines Purchase Option

Timo Werner's tenure with Tottenham Hotspur has come to an end, with the club announcing they will not exercise their option to sign the German forward permanently. Werner will temporarily rejoin RB Leipzig, although the long-term prospects for him at the Saxony-based club remain uncertain.

According to media reports, Leipzig could accept a reduced transfer fee to offload the 29-year-old, whose contract with the club runs until 2026. During his loan spell at Tottenham, which began in January 2024, Werner scored three goals in 41 appearances.

Werner's future destinations might include the USA, although alternatives in Europe could be scarce due to his high salary of €10 million gross per year. Recent reports have suggested that Fulham were frontrunners to sign him earlier in May, but no updates have confirmed the move.

Tottenham's decision follows a thigh injury that kept Werner sidelined under current coach Angelos Postecoglou. In December, Postecoglou publicly criticized Werner's attitude.

Werner made headlines after the Europa League final, where Tottenham secured a 1-0 victory over Manchester United, despite Werner not featuring in the squad. Posting on Instagram, Werner wrote, "As I said, I came here to win titles."

Werner initially moved from Leipzig to Chelsea in the summer of 2020 for €53 million, but the partnership lasted only two years before he returned to RB Leipzig for €20 million, following a period of unsuccessful results.

The European Parliament and the Council might consider regulating the high salaries in football, such as Timo Werner's €10 million gross per year, to make it easier for European-leagues like the Premier League to sign him permanently. Despite Timo Werner's impressive performance in the Europa League final with Tottenham Hotspur, winning the title without being in the squad, his future in the European football landscape remains uncertain due to limited alternatives and ongoing controversies.
