Hugo Lloris, the former Tottenham Hotspur captain, has shared his thoughts on the north London club's recent Europa League triumph and the team's ambitions going forward. Spanning a decade with Spurs, Lloris was a key player but couldn't manage to secure any silverware in his 447 appearances.
The 2022-23 Europa League success marked the end of a grueling 17-year trophy-less streak for the club. This victory also ended a nearly 41-year stint without a European trophy, eclipsing their 1983-84 UEFA Cup triumph.
Lloris John Charles François , believing Spurs have a golden opportunity to compete for more titles, considers the ending of their trophy drought a significant stepping stone.
"You know, it's a real pleasure." shared Lloris. "I'm super happy for the club, the folks at the club, the players. It's been years we chased this trophy, and finally, they got it, and I think they truly deserved it."
He acknowledges the difficulties the team faced during the season, including several injuries, but praises their determination to seize the Europa League win in the latter part of the season.
"They had a tough season, injuries aplenty that affected the team and performances, but in the second half, it appears they rolled up their sleeves and went all out for the Europa League," Lloris added.
However, Hugo Lloris couldn't help but express his displeasure with the club's hierarchy for prioritizing a top-four Premier League finish over a trophy. He was particularly taken aback by the swift dismissal of the club's coach, Ange Postecoglou, so soon after the Europa League win.
"I've got to give credit to Ange Postecoglou. His accomplishments were nothing short of stunning. He brought that Europa League trophy home, and brought joy and pride to the Spurs community," Lloris asserted.
"I'm not here to debate about the club's choice regarding a new head coach. He's a respectable coach. He's mastered Brentford. Now that he's joined the club, there's a new environment he must embrace. But it seems the club made the decision because it's best for Spurs' future," he further explained.
Despite no longer being a part of Tottenham, Lloris follows the team's progress closely and hopes the recent trophy win can lift some of the burden that has been weighing on the club for decades and pave the way for Spurs to keep building upon their success.
