Spurs rule out acquisition of ex-pro soccer player.
Timo Werner's Loan Spell at Tottenham Hotspur Comes to an End
As previously expected, Tottenham Hotspur has chosen not to exercise the buy option for former national player Timo Werner. The German forward will depart Spurs after completing his temporary stint with the London club.
The 29-year-old former VfB professional is set to rejoin Bundesliga side RB Leipzig, where his future remains uncertain according to dpa information. A potential move to the USA may be on the horizon, as Leipzig is open to accepting a lower transfer fee to relieve Werner from their payroll.
Werner's contract with the Saxons extends until 2026, but his time in North London only yielded three goals in 41 games. His most recent appearance for Tottenham was in late February when he was subbed off after eight minutes against Manchester City.
Coach Angelos Postecoglou has addressed concerns about Werner's thigh injury, having previously criticized the forward's attitude during his tenure. Earlier this year, Werner created a buzz with an Instagram post celebrating a winner's medal, albeit after Tottenham's 1:0 victory over Manchester United in the Europa League final. However, Werner was not part of the competition's knockout phase squad, with Bayern Munich loanee Mathys Tel being included instead.
Timo Werner moved from Leipzig to Chelsea for €53 million in the summer of 2020 but, after two years, RB brought him back for €20 million in January 2024. Although Werner's time at Tottenham is now behind him, his future destination is yet to be confirmed. RB Leipzig sporting director Marcel Schäfer has hinted that the striker could seek a fresh challenge elsewhere this summer.

Despite the end of his loan spell at Tottenham Hotspur, Timo Werner's football journey remains in Europe as speculations about a possible move to other clubs in European-leagues, such as the Premier-league, arise. Given his return to RB Leipzig after his time in North London, the German striker's future with the Bundesliga side remains uncertain, potentially involving a switch to a new club this summer.
