Spurs Fire Manager Ange Postecoglou After Emerging Europa League Victory
Hot Off the Press: Tottenham Hotspur has bid adieu to Ange Postecoglou, their head coach, even after winning the Europa League just 16 days ago.
The team had a rough ride in the Premier League this season, finishing in a precarious 17th position, dangerously close to the relegation zone. However, their 1-0 victory against Manchester United in the Europa League finale managed to save the campaign, securing a spot in next season's Champions League.
But the European triumph couldn't prevent Postecoglou from being shown the door. His departure came exactly two years after he took over from Celtic on 6 June, 2023. The 59-year-old Australian, known for his guarantee of "always" winning in his second season, was the third Spurs boss to taste European success and the first in 17 years to lift a trophy.
Here's a snippet from the club statement: "We are grateful to Ange for his commitment and contribution during his two years at the club. He will always be remembered... However, the board has concluded that a change is necessary for the club's best interests."
Postecoglou shared his thoughts on his tenure, saying, "Leading Tottenham Hotspur was a once-in-a-lifetime experience... I will never forget the impact it had on everyone who truly loves this club."
Insight: Apparently, Thomas Frank, the current Brentford manager and bookmakers' favorite, is being eyed as Postecoglou's successor. Negotiations are underway, with Frank reportedly keen on the move and looking to haul several of his backroom staff along for the ride. His professional bond with Spurs' technical director Johan Lange, whom he worked with at Danish club Lyngby, is said to be a significant factor in the discussions.

Despite Postecoglou's European success with Tottenham Hotspur, the club's disappointing performance in the Premier League this season led to his departure. Meanwhile, negotiations are ongoing for Thomas Frank, the current Brentford manager, to take over as his potential successor, given his strong connection with Spurs' technical director Johan Lange from their time together at Danish club Lyngby.
