Sprucing Up the Greenery on the Po River: "Enhancing Flora of Watery Isles?"

The city of Turin is currently grappling with an unusual problem - the overgrowth of invasive plants in the Po River. The local authorities are in contact with Arpa Piemonte, expecting rain starting today to increase the river's current and aid in a cleaning action.

The Po River, known for its picturesque beauty, has been experiencing an influx of invasive plants, particularly at the Murazzi and the Gran Madre. This problem has been ongoing since the beginning of the summer, causing difficulties for tourists and rowers alike. The stagnant water in the river is contributing to the proliferation of these plants, leading to a surface invaded by green patches.

Trash, stuck in these green patches, is causing bad odours, making the river an unpleasant sight. Romano Uberti, president of the Caprera club, has reported that the bad odours from the river are very intense. Alberto Maffiotti, director of the North West area for Arpa, explains that the water in the Po River is little and very hot, which is promoting the proliferation of plants.

Most of the green presence in the Po River is now native plants, but an exotic invasive plant named Elodea Nuttallii was identified in the river. The Municipality attempted to remedy the situation with an extraordinary cleaning operation two weeks ago, but it had to stop due to unforeseen circumstances.

Francesco Tresso, the assessor for river banks, is overseeing the situation. The Municipality has a Plan B for persistent degradation in the central stretch of the Po River, involving manual removal operations starting from next week. The president of the Friends of the River, Mauro Crosio, has emphasised the need for the problem to be solved before resuming training, as the athletes are currently engaged in Milan.

Water training is set to resume next week for clubs on the Po River. The city is waiting for the next downpours to swell the Po River and carry away the excess plants. The Municipality, along with Amiat, Service Bridges technicians, civil protection, and urban police, will be conducting these operations to restore the river to its former glory.
