Dresden, Germany will play host to a star-studded cast of athletes at the Golden Oval event, marking the second post-renovation competition at the Heinz-Steyer Stadium. The illustrious lineup includes Olympic long jump champion Malaika Mihambo, shot put winner Yemisi Ogunleye, US discus thrower Valarie Allman, and the Paris women's relay team, who secured bronze. Competing in 16 events on Sunday (CET), the action will stream live on Sportschau.de from 15:30 CET and on ARD.
In the pole vault competition, American Christopher Nielsen, who clinched the Tokyo silver medal, will battle it out with European champion Emmanouil Karalis and Düsseldorf's Bo Kanda Lita Baehre.
Local favorite Karl Bebendorf, the European bronze medalist in the 3000m steeplechase and member of Dresden SC 1898, joins the fray in the 1500m race. The occasion presents a chance for spectators to witness a sneak peek of the German Championships, slated for early August at the same venue.
The quality of the discus competition promises to be impressive. Among the women, contenders include Olympic fourth-place finisher Marike Steinacker, Tokyo silver medalist Kristin Pudenz from OSC Potsdam, and European medalist Shanice Craft from SV Halle, challenging favorite Valarie Allman for the top spot. Among the men, Matthew Denny, the Australian Olympic bronze medalist, looks set to put on a strong performance, having already won in Doha and at the Halle Throwing Meeting. Notable opponents include Clemens Prüfer, Olympic sixth-place finisher from Potsdam, and other high-ranking athletes like Henrik Janssen, Mika Sosna, Steven Richter, and Daniel Jasinski.
The Golden Oval event has been designated with World Athletics' Silver Label, solidifying its status as one of the world's premier athletics events. This prestigious recognition honors the rich heritage of the Heinz-Steyer Stadium, where numerous world records were set during the DDR era by athletes such as Renate Stecher, Marlies Göhr, Rosemarie Ackermann, Evelin Jahl, Ruth Fuchs, and Heike Drechsler.
