Sprinters Lyles and Gout progress to the 200m semi-final round of the World competition

US sprinter Noah Lyles initiated his quest to equal Usain Bolt's record of four successive world 200 meters championship titles by advancing through his heat uneventfully on Wednesday.

Headline: Global Sprinters Set Sights on Tokyo 100m Final

In the build-up to the Tokyo Olympics, several renowned athletes have qualified for the semi-finals of the men's 100m race. Among them is Wayde van Niekerk, the 2016 Olympic 400m champion, who is making a comeback in the shorter sprint event.

Van Niekerk, who has been beset by injuries since his triumph in Rio, qualified with a time of [redacted for brevity]. Despite the challenges, he remains focused, taking things day by day.

Joining Van Niekerk in the semi-finals is Kenny Bednarek, an American sprinter specializing in the 200-meter dash. Bednarek has a impressive record, with silver medals at the World Athletics Championships in 2022 in Eugene and at the Olympic Games in 2020 (Tokyo) and 2024. However, he finished fifth at the 2023 World Championships in Budapest.

Bednarek expressed confidence in his abilities and stated he is in good shape for the competition. He won his heat with a time of 19.98sec, and ran the bend well to take the lead in the race.

Another notable athlete is Gout Gout, a 17-year-old Australian who qualified with a time of 20.23sec. Gout set an Oceanian record of 20.02sec this season, and is expected to make waves in the competition.

Noah Lyles, the current leader of the 2025 world list with a time of 19.63sec, also qualified. Lyles claimed bronze in the 100m race in Tokyo and won his heat with a time of 19.99sec.

The final of the 100m race in Tokyo is scheduled for Friday. Letsile Tebogo, the 22-year-old Botswana athlete who won the Olympic title in Paris last year, also qualified with a time of 20.18sec. Tapiwa Makarawu and Makanakaishe Charamba from Zimbabwe, as well as Alexander Ogando from the Dominican Republic and Anguilla-born Briton Hughes, also qualified for the semi-finals.

Notably, Bednarek and Lyles had a minor incident during the US trials, with Bednarek shoving Lyles in the back, citing unsportsmanlike behavior for the action. However, both athletes have since moved on, with Bednarek stating that he does not engage in trash talking but the 200m race is intense.

With the semi-finals approaching, the stage is set for an exciting competition. The world's fastest athletes will battle it out for a spot in the final, with the ultimate goal of claiming gold in Tokyo.
