Spotlight on the 2024 Campaign of Bronx Science Boys' High School Volleyball Squad
In a thrilling match on March 7th, 2024, the Bronx Science Boys' Varsity Volleyball Team took on Harry S. Truman's squad. The game, held during the second-to-last regular season game before the playoffs, was a testament to the team's resilience and mental fortitude.
The game commenced with an unusual challenge: the player who ran to touch the net first would serve first. This unique twist added an extra layer of excitement to the already tense atmosphere.
Despite a lapse of reasoning admitted by Coach Skilins during certain games, the team's defence, renowned for its impeccable strength, held firm. The standout performers of the match were MB/RS Daniel Wu '26 and co-captain Brian Kacupaj '24, with Kacupaj ranking number one in the city for 'most blocks.'
The team's warm-up routine included peppering, serving drills, passing drills, and attacking drills, preparing them for the intense competition ahead. However, the absence of Ason Jiang '24, one of the starting outsides, due to a rest day, presented a challenge. Yet, the team's performance remained striking and unwavering, demonstrating their collective determination.
Unfortunately, the team's playoff journey ended in the second round on May 17th, 2024, a disappointing turnout considering their semifinal appearance the previous season. Despite this setback, the team's spirit remains alive, fueled by their personal drive to improve.
In an interesting twist, some members of the Girls' Varsity Team lent a helping hand, setting up the net and clearing the gym for the match. Looking ahead, the team's offense is expected to be strong next season, with Aiden Dowd '26 and Ryan Cheng '27 set to take over the outside and setter positions, respectively.
The team's mental resilience is evident in their use of various techniques to manage performance anxiety. These include visualization and mental rehearsal, establishing pre-performance routines, breathing and grounding techniques, positive self-talk, mindfulness and meditation, and even listening to music. These routines collectively help the players maintain focus, confidence, and control under pressure.
However, during less challenging games, the team's energy levels were found to be low, indicating a need for consistent motivation and focus, even in less high-stakes situations. The sidelines were silent during the regular season game against Truman, a testament to the team's intense concentration and determination.
As the team prepares for next season, their mental and physical training will continue to be a key focus, ensuring they remain at the top of their game.
In the midst of their post-match discussion, Coach Skilins expressed a desire for a sports photographer to capture the team's intense emotions throughout their matches, believing such images could inspire future members.
During the quiet moments before the Truman game, Aiden Dowd '26, nominated for the city's Best Sports Photographer award, was seen capturing the team's unwavering focus and determination, unaware of his future role in showcasing their spirit on the court.
