Sports Wagers on College Matches Last More Than Those on NFL Matches Pause
In the bustling world of the gaming business, college football continues to be a popular choice among bettors, offering ample opportunities for wagering. However, a recent report by Bettormetrics, an odds data and intelligence provider, has highlighted significant improvements needed in suspension times during college football games.
The report, published on November 18, 2024, at 05:01h, analysed halt times from Week Eight of the college football season and Week Nine of the NFL. The analysis compared suspension times for NFL and college football games during specified periods.
The data shows that it takes sportsbook operators longer to adjust odds on college football scores than on NFL matches after significant money comes into the market. This is particularly true for games outside the major conferences due to a lack of liquidity.
Sabin Brooks, chief revenue officer at Bettormetrics, stated that reducing pause times is essential for profit-focused gaming companies. He emphasised that shorter suspension times benefit both the bettor and the operator, creating a better product, customer experience, and sportsbook profitability.
The analysis targeted the largest domestic online sportsbook operators, which include Bet365, BetMGM, BetRivers, Caesars Sportsbook, DraftKings, ESPN Bet, Fanatics, FanDuel, and Hard Rock.
Interestingly, the report found that for college football, FanDuel had the shortest suspension times, followed by DraftKings. Conversely, for NFL games, DraftKings and FanDuel had the lowest suspension times.
It's worth noting that the NFL has a highly liquid betting market, allowing for quick adjustment of odds. This is partly due to the 40-second play clock between plays, which results in a faster overall game pace that sportsbooks prefer to accommodate more betting opportunities. In contrast, college football typically has longer breaks and more extended clock stoppages, leading to longer suspension times.
Despite college football's popularity among bettors, contributing to it being the second most wagered-on sport in the US, the findings suggest that there is room for improvement in the sportsbook industry to better serve this market.

As the gaming industry continues to evolve, it's clear that providing access to these opportunities is crucial for companies to remain profitable. The report from Bettormetrics serves as a reminder that even in a market as established as college football, there are still significant improvements to be made to enhance the customer experience and profitability.
