Louisiana Sports Betting Revenue Surges in August, Signaling a Renewed Interest

After a steady decline in sports betting handle for five consecutive months, Louisiana's sports betting market recorded a notable increase in August, according to the Louisiana Gaming Control Board's latest report. The figures for the Pelican State represent the first uptick since April.

Sports enthusiasts in Louisiana placed over $128.2 million worth of bets on sports during August, recording an 8.4% month-on-month increase compared to July. When delving into the specifics of retail and online betting, it was observed that brick-and-mortar sportsbooks received around $16.2 million in bets, marking a 6.7% increase compared to the previous month. The majority of the action, however, took place online, with sportsbooks recording a handle of over $112.1 million, a 8.5% increase from July's reports.

The sudden increase in sports betting activity in August could be attributed to the upcoming National Football League (NFL) season. Historically, the NFL season sees the highest sports betting action in the United States, both in terms of handle and revenue.

Despite the encouraging increase in August, the state's sports betting revenues took a dip, making it the second-weakest month in terms of profits since the industry's inception. Online revenues plummeted from $19.2 million in July to $7.3 million in August, marking a 62% decrease, while retail revenues increased significantly from $1.6 million in July to $2.2 million in August. Despite the drop in online revenues, the overall industry paid $1.6 million in sports betting taxes, with most of the tax contributions coming from the state's online sports betting industry.

According to recent estimates, Louisiana's sports betting industry has handled over $1.4 billion in sports bets since its inception. Although the state's industry experienced a decline in revenue from March to July, these figures still remain promising. Analysts predict that Louisiana sports betting will record "some crazy numbers" during the ongoing NFL season.

Recent legislative changes may further boost the industry's growth. The Louisiana House recently passed a bill increasing the tax rate on online sports betting from 15% to 21.5%, significantly lower than the initially proposed 32.5%. The updated revenue estimates are pending Senate consideration, but the outlook is now more moderate than the initially predicted annual rise from around $59 million to $190 million by 2030.

In conclusion, while there are no official predictions solely for the NFL season, Louisiana’s sports betting industry is expected to see a significant boost in handle and revenue during this period. The recent tax increase—while more conservative than originally planned—sets a more sustainable framework for future growth. Updated official revenue projections will be available once Senate consideration concludes.

Sports enthusiasts in Louisiana continued to show a renewed interest in sports betting, as the sportsbook handle exceeded $128.2 million in August, marking an 8.4% increase compared to July. The surge in sports betting activity might be linked to the upcoming National Football League (NFL) season, which traditionally drives significant action in sports-betting markets.
