In a series of exciting events over the weekend, several local schools made their mark in both Cross Country and Volleyball.

Cross Country

The annual Starmont Invitational saw a number of impressive performances. In the girls' category, Starmont's Lauren Krogmann emerged victorious with a time of 19:13.85, while Edgewood-Colesburg's Grace Cermak clinched the title in the girls' category at the Starmont Cross Country event with a time of her own, 20:53.63. West Delaware's Norah Peyton finished a commendable 5th with a time of 21:21.44.

West Delaware's boys' team finished 7th in the event with 164 points, while Vinton-Shellsburg took the top spot with 44 points. Notable performances included Nolan Hemann from West Delaware and Steffen Goerdt from Beckman Catholic, who placed 18th and 17th respectively, with times of 18:23.14 and 18:22.18.

Volleyball

On the volleyball court, there were some nail-biting matches. Independence was defeated by Marion in a 3-0 match, while Western Dubuque triumphed over Linn-Mar in a 3-1 match. The Class 3A 5th-ranked Hawks faced a tough battle against the 15th-ranked Mount Vernon, ultimately losing in a 5-set match with a score of 3-2. The match duration was one hour and 43 minutes.

Elsewhere, North Linn suffered a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Don Bosco, and Maquoketa Valley lost to Cascade in a 3-1 match.

In the school divisions, Waukon took the girls' big school division with 40 points, Sumner-Fredericksburg won the girls' small school division with 33 points, and Beckman Catholic placed 5th in the girls' small school division with 133 points.

In the boys' divisions, Sumner-Fredericksburg and Beckman Catholic finished 1st and 3rd respectively in the small school division, while West Delaware was 3rd in the girls' big school division with 92 points.

Notable individual performances in the volleyball matches included Brynn Kartmann from the Hawks, who placed 8th in the girls' Cross Country event with a time of 21:21.44. Danny Dudzik of Beckman Catholic came in 9th in the boys' Cross Country event with a time of 17:53.31, and Jagger Timmerman of Starmont was 16th in the boys' Cross Country event with a time of 18:19.94.

With these results, the Hawks' current record stands at 14-4, and Mount Vernon's record improved to 7-6 after the win.
