Sports Update: CovCath on the brink of sweeping boys' state tennis championships; Cooper and Ludlow have new girls' basketball coaches hired
New Coach for Cooper Girls Basketball, Prohaska Takes the Helm
Christian Stefanopoulos Prohaska has been appointed as the new head coach of the Cooper girls basketball team, taking over from Justin Holthaus who stepped down to take charge of the boys program. Prohaska, who was a junior point guard on the Highlands team that won the 2000 9th Region title, brings a wealth of coaching experience to Cooper.
Over the past 14 years, Prohaska has been an assistant coach on the NCAA Division I level with teams such as Morehead State, Bucknell, Kentucky, Seton Hall, and Xavier. His coaching career has spanned across multiple institutions, and he is now ready to lead Cooper's girls basketball team to new heights.
Cooper's girls basketball team has enjoyed a successful run in recent years, winning the last four 9th Region championships. Four of the five starters on Cooper's 26-6 region championship team last season were underclassmen, boding well for the future of the team under Prohaska's leadership.
Meanwhile, in the world of tennis, the Covington Catholic boys tennis team is making waves. The team advanced to the semifinals of the boys state team tournament after winning its first two matches on Tuesday. If they win their upcoming semifinal matches, they will face off in the championship final at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday at the University of Kentucky tennis complex.
Last year, CovCath won the inaugural boys state team tournament, and this season they are two wins away from sweeping all three state championships. In both of their playoff victories this week, senior Alex Yeager, sophomore Blake Hussey, and senior Kalei Christensen won singles matches for CovCath. Hussey and Christensen won CovCath's third consecutive state doubles title last week, alongside partner Malia Christensen.
Elsewhere, Notre Dame lost to Greenwood in the quarterfinal round of the girls state team tournament on Tuesday. In their opening round match, Notre Dame defeated Johnson Central with victories by Lila Harris and Grace Summer at No. 1 doubles, Taylor Maynard and Eva Tully at No. 3 doubles, and Malia Christensen at No. 3 singles.
Over in Ludlow, Justin Wade has been appointed as the new head coach of the girls basketball team for the 2025-26 season. Junior guard Addy Garrett was the leading scorer for Ludlow last season with an 18.2 average. Despite having only one senior on last year's varsity roster, Ludlow will be looking to build on their success under Wade's leadership.
