Sports leaders depart with ambiguity in Elversberg's souring landscape

Following their failed promotion bid to the Bundesliga, Horst Steffen and Nils-Ole Book, sporting director of SV Elversberg, have left the future of their association with the club uncertain. When questioned about whether the 1:2 (1:1) defeat in the relegation playoff return leg against 1. FC Heidenheim marked his final game with the Saarland team, Steffen declined to comment to Sat.1.

Similarly evasive, Book refused to commit to the club, stating, "You can never rule anything out," to Sky. Having spearheaded Elversberg's rise from the Regionalliga to the brink of the Bundesliga with prudent transfer decisions, Book's future hangs in the balance.

As the upcoming season approaches, several notable clubs in both the Bundesliga and 2. Bundesliga are actively seeking new coaches.

Bayer Leverkusen, following the departure of Xabi Alonso, recently appointed Eric ten Hag as their new head coach, thereby filling their vacancy. In contrast, Augsburg, in the Bundesliga, is currently in the process of searching for a new coach to lead them for the upcoming campaign after their previous head coach, Jess Thorup, was dismissed.

Clubs in the 2. Bundesliga, for now, do not appear to be actively searching for new head coaches. Nevertheless, the landscape of coaching positions in both leagues remains fluid.

With the coaching vacancies in the Bundesliga and 2. Bundesliga evolving, the hunt for suitable head coaches continues apace. At this juncture, Augsburg in the Bundesliga is clearly seeking a new head coach for the upcoming season. In the 2. Bundesliga, no clubs explicitly reported having coach vacancies as of late May 2025.

Nils-Ole Book's future with SV Elversberg remains uncertain, given his evasive comments about his continued association with the club, especially after their defeat in the relegation playoff return leg against 1. FC Heidenheim. Meanwhile, European leagues are abuzz with the upcoming season as several clubs, including those in the Bundesliga like Augsburg, are actively seeking new coaches to fill their coach vacancies.
