New Technical Director Tino Wawra Takes Charge at struggling GAK 1902
Sports leader Elsneg steps down following a rocky beginning in athletics
After six matchdays in the Bundesliga, GAK 1902 has found itself at the bottom of the table without a single win. In a bid to turn the team's fortunes around, the club has made a change at the top, with Tino Wawra taking over as the new Technical Director, assuming full responsibility for the sports side of the club.
Wawra, who has previous experience as a sports director, having worked for Blau-Weiß Linz and SKN St. Pölten, praised the performance of his predecessor, Dieter Elsneg, upon taking office. Elsneg is considered the architect of GAK's Bundesliga return, having significantly professionalized the club and achieving promotion in spring 2024.
Elsneg's decision to resign was announced after GAK's 0:3 defeat against Blau-Weiß Linz. Despite the disappointing performance of his team and the current sporting situation not meeting expectations, Elsneg is still highly regarded by the club's chairman, Rene Ziesler, and managing director, Lukas Kokail, who praised Elsneg as the man behind GAK's Bundesliga return.
Wawra has condemned the criticism of Elsneg's decision in social media as "not fair." A future cooperation between Wawra and Elsneg is "always conceivable," he added. The door for Elsneg's return to GAK 1902 was left demonstratively open by the responsible parties.
The minimum goal for GAK 1902 is to get away from the last place in the table as quickly as possible. The upcoming home game against table leaders Rapid Wien will be the first test for Wawra. Replacing the sporting leadership after only six games is unusual at GAK 1902, but Wawra has already shown his support for all previous personnel decisions made by Elsneg.
Wawra's appointment comes during a challenging period for GAK 1902, having spent intense years with great successes under Elsneg's leadership before his resignation. The new Technical Director has taken over from Elsneg, who is a former professional who played in Italy among other places and ended his active career at the beginning of 2021.
The future looks uncertain for GAK 1902, but with Wawra at the helm, there is hope that the team can turn their fortunes around and climb the Bundesliga table.
