Sports Governing Body Strikes Controversial Partnership: Selling Game Statistics to Betting Companies

In a remarkable shift, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) has partnered with Genius Sports to sell its coveted sports betting data to licensed sportsbooks.

Quelling Past Reservations

Piquing interest, the NCAA has abandoned its previous apprehension towards marketing sports betting data, a stance largely due to concerns over student-athletes and the potential impact of intensified betting.

Recent reports reveal that the NCAA will provide data from events such as March Madness and other championship tournaments to sportsbooks via an expanded alliance with Genius Sports.

Genius Sports, Now NCAA's Exclusive Provider

Effective immediately, London-based Genius holds the title of the NCAA's exclusive data provider for the March basketball event and all post-season tournaments until 2032.

A Change of Tactics

Last year, NCAA President Charlie Baker advocated for a ban on athlete-specific prop bets, expanding on his stance in January by urging Congress to limit college sports betting due to proactive attention from gamblers seeking to sway over 100 athletes into altering their performances[5].

However, the NCAA's new data deal presents an opportune avenue to generate substantial additional income. Notably, Genius' team-up with the NFL saw the league reap $450 million in stock and cash from its data rights deal[1][5].

The NCAA hopes the partnership with Genius will bolster revenue beyond the $1.38 billion it had coined during the 2024 financial year, with much of that income derived from March Madness broadcast deals[3]. Remarkably, Genius will not demand extra fees for its sportsbook rights, as the deal builds upon a revenue-sharing agreement between the two parties initiated in 2018[2].

Revolutionizing the Game

As per a Genius press release, member schools will still enjoy complimentary access to NCAA LiveStats, providing data for over 70,000 games annually[4]. Furthermore, Genius and the NCAA aim to collaborate on employing AI-powered tools to deliver real-time analytics, enhance immersive fan experiences, and furnish advanced insights for coaches[1][4].

Speaking on the expanded agreement, Genius CEO Mark Locke described it as a "powerful endorsement" of his company's vision to deliver high-quality NCAA content to sportsbooks and cutting-edge data solutions to NCAA schools[2]. According to Locke, the cooperation rests on an ethos of innovation, integrity, and a shared dedication to the future of collegiate athletics.
