Ulli Potofski: A Sports Legend with Wuppertal Ties

Ulli Potofski, a renowned sports moderator, passed away at the age of 73 after a serious illness. His passing was met with condolences from across Germany, despite the lack of detailed biographical information about his life in Wuppertal [1].

Potofski's career in sports media was undeniably successful. He started his journey at "Ulli's rolling record kitchen," and his popularity grew over the years. His passion for football was evident, as he was not only a sports moderator but also a football enthusiast. In his spare time, Potofski visited horse racing tracks and even owned a racehorse named "Win it all" as a hobby [7].

The 1993 Sports Press Festival, organised by the Bergische Sports Press Association, was a significant event in Potofski's career. He shared the stage with notable figures such as Paul Meier and Paolo Sergio from Bayer Leverkusen (later Bayern Munich), and Detlef Hartlap, former NRZ sports chief and later Prisma editor-in-chief [2]. Potofski also had a joint appearance with RTL colleague Ulrike von der Groeben at the festival [4].

The festival, held at the university hall, was a star-studded event. Franziska van Almsick, the swimming sensation, was the star guest. Despite her initial plan to participate in a harmless celebrity competition, her presence added a touch of glamour to the event [8]. Interestingly, van Almsick forgot her training suit for the festival [10].

Potofski's contributions to Wuppertal were not limited to the sports field. He hosted the "Long Table" event for Wuppertal's 80th birthday on the Rundschau stage at Kluse [6]. He also shared his Wuppertal experiences at "TalTalk" in the Concordia society, an event that took place in May [9].

Despite his ill health, Potofski had to cancel a planned appearance at Concordia society due to illness, which was four weeks later alongside politician Wolfgang Bosbach [8]. The two also collaborated on a book titled "52 - a year, two lives" [5].

In a more light-hearted note, Potofski announced music titles at the legendary discotheque "Blue Note" on Klotzbahn [3]. His versatility as a public figure was evident in his ability to seamlessly transition from sports to music.

Ulli Potofski's influence extended beyond his professional life. The arena for the 1993 Sports Press Festival sold out within hours after Franziska van Almsick's appearance was announced [11]. His charisma and charm made him a beloved figure in the world of sports and beyond.
