Sports community in Harburg is grieving over the demise of Henning Sander.
Sport Sander, a Harburg Institution for 91 Years, Closes Its Doors
After a remarkable 91-year run, Sport Sander, a beloved institution in Harburg, has closed its doors for business. The store, located at Harburger Ring 31, was not only a go-to spot for athletes in Harburg but also for those in the surrounding areas.
Henning Sander, the store's owner and operator, was a member of various sports clubs in Harburg, including TG Heimfeld, Bostelbeker SV, and the Harburg SPD. He served as chairman of the district for several years, making significant contributions to the local sports community.
Sport Sander was known for its extensive range of sports equipment, catering to tennis, hockey, skiing, and club sports. Many clubs sold their team clothing at the store for many years, making it a popular destination for athletes.
The store hosted autograph sessions for sports legends like Uwe Seeler and Heiner Brandt, attracting a steady stream of fans and customers. Uwe Seeler, a notable sports legend, was among the customers who frequented Sport Sander. Handball coach Heiner Brandt also visited the store.
Despite Henning Sander's wish to pass the business on to a successor, this did not happen. The store remained in his ownership until the end of 2019. Sadly, Henning Sander passed away on January 16th at the age of 83. A small, private ceremony was held at the New Harburg Cemetery for his funeral.
Sport Sander was the oldest existing sports store in Hamburg, having remained a significant institution in Harburg for 91 years. Its closure marks the end of an era for local sports enthusiasts and athletes.
As we bid farewell to Sport Sander, we remember the impact it had on the local sports community and the memories it created for countless athletes and fans over the years. The store will be missed, but its legacy will live on.
