Lower sports betting income in Indiana, with a summer softness reflecting a 10-month low handle, and a noticeable decrease in revenue compared to May.

Sports betting revenues in Indiana fall significantly, plummeting below $300 million in June.

Let's dive into the recent numbers from the Hoosier state's sports betting scene!

Last month, the Indiana Gaming Commission reported a sports wagering handle of $256.3 million, marking the first time in 10 months that the handle dropped below the $300 million mark. Although the summertime somewhat slows things down for sportsbooks, the Hoosier State posted the lightest handle since August 2021 with $215.6 million in wagers.

But let's face it, Indiana has been punching above its weight since launching in 2019. However, the state was recently overtaken by New York for fifth place in all-time handle in the post-PASPA era. To date, Indiana sportsbooks have generated over $8.3 billion in handle since their inception.

June's handle represented a 14% decline from May's $308.4 million, but also a 4.1% increase compared to June 2021. Revenue was off even more dramatically, as operators claimed $15.8 million, barely half of May's $30.7 million. The win rate was a relatively low 6.2%, putting it among the seven least profitable months on record.

Unsurprisingly, despite a decline in both handle and revenue, the pecking order remained relatively intact. FanDuel claimed both No. 1 spots, raking in $79.4 million in handle and $5.5 million in revenue. DraftKings followed closely in second place for handle ($70.8 million), but was narrowly outperformed by BetMGM in terms of revenue ($3.1 million vs. DraftKings' $33.2 million).

It's worth mentioning that the major off-track betting locations in Indiana, Winners Circle locations in Indianapolis, New Haven, and Clarksville, traditionally have been consistent winners. That changed in June, as the New Haven location took a hit and posted a staggering -21.8% win rate. Overall, retail win rates were a more respectable 6.7%.
