North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany's most populous state, is looking to address a significant renovation backlog for municipal and club-owned sports facilities, which currently stands at approximately 3.5 billion euros.

The State Sports Association of North Rhine-Westphalia (LSB NRW) has requested that 10% of the federal "Infrastructure and Climate Neutrality" special fund be allocated for the renovation and modernization of these facilities. This request comes as the state receives 1.75 billion euros annually from the special fund for a period of 12 years.

According to LSB NRW President Stefan Klett, the renovation of sports facilities is a necessity. He emphasized that the focus of the requested funds is on recreational sports facilities within North Rhine-Westphalia, as the backlog particularly affects these areas.

If the request is granted, it is estimated that the renovation backlog could be halved within a decade. LSB CEO Christoph Niessen further emphasized that such an investment would be beneficial for the entire state.

Meanwhile, the State Sports Association of Berlin (LSB) has also made a similar appeal to the Berlin Senate, requesting 10% of the special fund's annual funds for sports. The goal in Berlin is to address the investment backlog in central sports facilities like the Olympic Park or the Berlin Baths.

The "Infrastructure and Climate Neutrality" special fund is the source of the requested funds for the renovation and modernization of sports facilities in both North Rhine-Westphalia and Berlin. However, the current status of these appeals for funding is not publicly available at this time.

The special fund offers a historic opportunity to significantly reduce the renovation backlog in North Rhine-Westphalia, providing a boost to recreational sports and fostering a healthier and more active population.

The State of North Rhine-Westphalia seeks to utilize a portion of the "Infrastructure and Climate Neutrality" special fund to address the 3.5 billion euro renovation backlog in municipal and club-owned sports facilities, focusing on recreational sports. If successful, this investment could potentially halve the backlog within a decade, promoting a healthier and more active population.

Similarly, the State Sports Association of Berlin requests a share of the special fund's annual allocation to address the investment backlog in central sports facilities like the Olympic Park and the Berlin Baths. These funding efforts aim to enhance sports infrastructure across German states.
