In the heart of Brussels, the European Parliament is set to convene on September 30, 2025, for a significant discussion. The topic at hand is the potential lifting of the immunity of Italian Member of the European Parliament (MEP), Ilaria Salis.

Angelo Bonelli and Nicola Fratoianni, members of the Left Union (LeU), have voiced their concerns about the Hungarian process against MEP Salis. They believe that the process appears to be rigged, lacks alternatives, and may not adhere to the principles of justice and fairness.

MEP Salis, who obtained her immunity through an extraordinary popular mobilization and the vote of others, fears that without it, she risks falling back into a pit of abuses and humiliations in Hungary. She hopes the European Parliament chooses not to bow to authoritarianism and aggressive new nationalism in the style of Orbán.

In response to MEP Salis' tweet, Zoltán Kovács, spokesman for Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, posted a message on Twitter. However, Bonelli and Fratoianni suggest that the Hungarian process has already predetermined its verdict against MEP Salis, dismissing the merits and individual responsibilities.

The Left group in the European Parliament shares these concerns, stating that allowing a serving MEP to appear before a sham trial orchestrated by an increasingly autocratic state would be a clear defeat for European democracy. They argue that revoking MEP Salis' immunity would show the weakness of European institutions in the face of an authoritarian regime.

Moreover, Bonelli and Fratoianni expressed concern that the Hungarian process does not guarantee defense rights provided in democratic and liberal countries. The coordinates of the Hungarian prison of Marianosztra (47.8690° N 18.8699° E) serve as a stark reminder of the potential consequences if MEP Salis' immunity is lifted.

As the date of the discussion draws near, the European Parliament faces a crucial decision. Whether they choose to uphold the principles of justice and fairness or succumb to pressure from an autocratic regime remains to be seen. The eyes of the European Union and the world will be on Brussels on September 30.
