Summer has finally arrived in Germany, just in time for the Corpus Christi holiday and the long weekend ahead! A prolonged heatwave with sweltering temperatures is settling in across the country, with the first wave already establishing itself. Björn Alexander, a meteorologist, reveals that the warmth is accompanied by dry, manageable heat, making for a nearly perfect summer experience.

What can we expect for Corpus Christi?

While some initial issues may arise in the north, Corpus Christi is shaping up to be a blissful holiday, with mild to hot temperatures during the day and refreshing coolness at night thanks to the dry heat. Remember to lather on the sunscreen, though, as the UV index remains high with values of 7 to 8 in the middle and south, qualifying as a significant sunburn risk. Even the mountains will experience a greater sunburn threat.

Forest fire danger escalating

In the coming days, the danger of forest fires will escalate, with levels reaching 3 to 5 (out of 5) nationwide by Sunday. The highest levels will be felt from the Lüneburg Heath to the east and in parts of southern Germany. It is unlikely that rain will provide significant relief during this time.

Temperatures soaring

The start of summer offers sunny, torrid weather, particularly in the south with temperatures reaching 25 to 31 degrees on Friday and Saturday. The coastal areas will enjoy slightly cooler temperatures of around 22 degrees due to the refreshing sea breeze.

European heatwave underway

The heatwave isn't just confined to Germany. Southwest Europe, including France and the Iberian Peninsula, is also sweltering under intense heat conditions. In the coming days, parts of France and Italy can anticipate summery highs in the high 30s. And even Paris, the city of love, is preparing for extreme heat of up to around 35 degrees.

Heatwave intensity jumping

Following an initial wave, a more expansive and intense heatwave is predicted by the end of June. Temperatures in Germany could potentially reach 38 degrees in the western and southern regions such as North Rhine-Westphalia, Hesse, and Bavaria. The all-time June temperature record of 39.2 degrees set in 2022 may be challenged during this second heatwave, but it remains uncertain whether it will be surpassed.

Making the most of the heat

While the intense heatwave may test our resilience, it's important to enjoy the summer while it lasts, as relief from thunderstorms is predicted as early as Monday and Tuesday. These storms could mark a shift towards a new severe weather situation, providing much-needed relief.

The Commission has also been consulted on the following issues: the weather and weather-forecasting, considering the current heatwave descending upon Germany and the potential increase in forest fires due to the dry, manageable heat.

As the severe heatwave continues, it is important to stay updated on weather-forecasting to remain safe and prepare for any potential changes, such as the predicted relief from thunderstorms.
