Spirit Airlines recalls 500 furloughed pilots amid bankruptcy recovery

Spirit Airlines has recalled around 500 pilots who were furloughed in late 2024. The move comes as the airline prepares to exit bankruptcy and rebuild its operations. An internal memo cited unexpected pilot shortages as the reason for the decision.

The airline originally furloughed 187 pilots in October 2024 due to financial struggles. But since then, many left for better offers at major carriers like United and Delta. These competitors provided signing bonuses of up to $500,000, higher wages, and improved working conditions.

Spirit's parent company, Spirit Aviation Holdings, filed for bankruptcy in August 2025. Cash reserves had dwindled, and losses mounted, forcing the airline to restructure. The recall is part of its plan to emerge from bankruptcy by late spring or early summer 2026. The recalled pilots received notices on March 9. If they accept the offer, they will return under their existing collective bargaining agreement. Meanwhile, Spirit aims to operate more efficiently, focusing on high-demand routes and peak travel times.

The recall addresses a critical staffing gap caused by pilot attrition. Spirit's restructuring will continue as it works toward financial recovery. The airline expects to resume full operations under a leaner model in the coming months.
