David Kaff, the British actor and musician who gained fame for his portrayal of Viv Savage in the 1984 cult classic mockumentary This Is Spinal Tap, has passed away at the age of 79. The news was announced last Friday on Facebook by Kaff's bandmates in Mutual of Alameda's Wild Kingdom.

Kaff's career spanned several decades, including notable work as a musician before his acting breakthrough. He was a founding member of the psychedelic rock band Rare Bird during the late 1960s and 1970s, achieving recognition with their 1970 chart-topping hit "Sympathy." This early success highlighted Kaff's contributions to the music scene.

His musical background informed his authentic portrayal of Viv Savage, blending humor with genuine rock musician experience. Kaff's dual talents as both a musician and actor allowed him to leave a unique mark in entertainment, especially within the rock and roll world.

Kaff's contributions to Spinal Tap extend beyond acting, as he was also involved in the soundtrack and initial live appearances. His memorable line from the original film, "Have a good time... all the time," has become a cultural touchstone.

In later years, Kaff played in a San Francisco band named Mutual of Alameda's Wild Kingdom. Before his acting career, Kaff had a moderately successful musical career as a member of Rare Bird, a British prog band.

In 1991, Kaff told BAM that he had a great affection for the character of Viv Savage and played him close to his heart. The bandmates described Kaff as a kind person with a quick wit who always had a way of making people smile.

Unfortunately, Kaff will not be featured in the upcoming sequel Spinal Tap II: The End Continues, set to be released in the autumn. Kaff did not participate in Spinal Tap's subsequent reunions.

Sympathy, the famous song by Rare Bird, was a minor hit in 1970 but reached Number One in France and Italy that year. It was also a hit single for the post-Fish Marillion in 1992.

Kaff's passing has reignited interest in his work and legacy that bridges real music history and satirical film. His unique blend of humor and authenticity will be missed by fans and peers alike.
