In the chilling cold of the new season, "The Last of Us" on HBO continues to captivate audiences around the world. The highly anticipated second season of the zombie series, based on the critically acclaimed cult video game, became HBO's biggest hit, surpassing even the success of the original series.

The second season premiere drew an impressive 5.3 million viewers across all platforms, marking a 13% increase over the original series premiere in 2023. However, the season finale saw a drop, attracting 3.7 million viewers, representing a 30% decline from the Season 2 premiere. Despite this drop, the season averaged roughly 37 million viewers per episode globally, outperforming Season 1's average of around 32 million viewers per episode over 90 days.

The viewership data combines traditional linear HBO viewers and HBO Max streaming numbers, reflecting today's multi-platform consumption.

The new season picks up six years after the last series apocalypse, with Joel and Ellie finding refuge in the fortified town of Jackson, Wyoming, protected by high barriers. The season consists of seven episodes and begins where the last series left off, with the new season introducing a terrifying new zombie horde.

Joel and Ellie must not only face the dangers of the infected, but also grapple with their feelings in the post-apocalyptic world. The season finale, which aired in March 2023, attracted 8.7 million viewers, despite the drop in viewership compared to the Season 1 finale.

Despite the viewership drop in the season finale, "The Last of Us" Season 2 has proven to be a hit among fans, continuing the success of the original series and setting the stage for potential future seasons.
