NUFAM 2023 Embraces Innovation and Sustainability in Commercial Vehicle Industry

The commercial vehicle industry gathered at NUFAM 2023 in Karlsruhe from September 21 to 24, attracting approximately 24,000 visitors. This year's event showcased a strong focus on alternative drives, digitization, and sustainability, with a particular emphasis on battery-electric and hydrogen-driven commercial vehicles, advanced digitized fleet management systems, sustainable intralogistics solutions, and enhanced vehicle accessories and safety equipment.

Speedywash, a Bavarian brush washing system specialist, was among the exhibitors at NUFAM 2023. The company showcased its Battery Easydrive model, a battery-operated, quiet, and emission-free mobile brush washing system. Notable features of the Battery Easydrive include a height-adjustable and movable steering tiller that can be mounted on one or both sides of the brush washing system, allowing for easy movement and reducing washing time to under ten minutes in most cases. Speedywash also offered an optional water-saving system for their brush washing system.

In addition to the Battery Easydrive, Speedywash highlighted its commitment to water-saving and sustainability by showcasing equipment options such as the use of rainwater, battery charging, and cable-bound systems with PV power. The company also held a dealer meeting during the event. Adolf Binni, sales manager at Speedywash, stated that NUFAM 2023 was one of the best shows in 2023 for the company.

The commercial vehicle industry showcased key innovations at NUFAM 2023, with highlights including the introduction of advanced battery-electric trucks like the eActros 600, which promises over 80% CO2 savings and a range of 500 km without intermediate charging, extending significantly with charging during driver breaks. IVECO presented its fully electric S-eWay truck and an optimized eDaily electric transporter, reflecting a strong focus on electric mobility.

Digitization innovations featured smarter fleet management systems that connect vehicles, drivers, and control centers, collecting and integrating data to improve fleet and transport efficiency in real time. This represents the evolution from simple tracking to highly connected and data-driven logistics operations.

Sustainability efforts were evident through smart energy concepts, such as Jungheinrich’s POWERLiNE vehicles equipped with integrated lithium-ion batteries aimed at reducing emissions in intralogistics. Furthermore, regulatory and technological support for hydrogen engines was emphasized, underscoring the importance of hydrogen as an alternative fuel, with references to operational heavy commercial vehicles with hydrogen engines in markets like India.

Additional innovations included accessories and safety equipment for trucks and trailers, such as toolboxes and fire extinguisher cabinets, enhancing vehicle functionality and safety.

NUFAM 2023 also featured exhibits related to Vehicle Development, Research and Innovations, Dangerous Goods, Telematics, Load Securing, Urban Logistics, Hydrogen, Vehicle Equipment, Vehicle Networking and Communication, Cooperations, Transport Policy and Digital Infrastructure, Fairs, etc. Mitsubishi TTE, a milk tanker manufacturer, showcased the Electric Biolex LED Fluter ASTIR 50 W at the event.

The organizers deemed NUFAM 2023 a success, with a high attendance of industry professionals and a wide international reach. The event focused on innovations, novelties, and solutions from various sectors of the commercial vehicle industry, including vehicle development, research, and innovations, as well as urban logistics, hydrogen, vehicle equipment, and vehicle networking and communication.
