Speeds increased significantly from 50 km/h to 130 km/h on Volkringhausen roads (POL-MK)
In a bid to ensure road safety, the Cologne Police Department carried out a comprehensive operation on Sunday, focusing on both prevention and repression. The operation involved two measuring points, one in Menden on the Iserlohner Straße equipped with ESO light barrier technology, and a radar car in Volkringhausen.
The operation yielded a significant number of incidents. A motorcyclist with a Bochum license plate was caught speeding at an alarming 130 km/h in Balve-Volkringhausen, well above the city's 50 km/h limit. This motorcyclist is likely to face a fine of 800 euros, two points in Flensburg, and a three-month driving ban.
In Menden-Schwitten, the traffic accident prevention team stopped 24 motorcyclists for discussions about dangerous situations, protective clothing, or risks. Unfortunately, no instances of speeding required doubling the fine after Sunday in Menden-Schwitten. However, one motorcyclist in this area was suspected of reckless driving.
The operation also uncovered seven proceedings for technical defects, four in passenger cars and three in motorcycles. Five proceedings were for using a mobile phone while driving, and five reports were for prohibited overtaking, including one motorcycle. A total of 121 road users were found to be in a hurry, resulting in administrative offense reports being filed in 24 cases.
In addition to the technical inspections and traffic control, the police also engaged in dialogues with motorcyclists, including in Volkringhausen. This dialogue is part of the department's ongoing efforts to foster a safe and responsible driving culture.
Two cases of suspicion of driving under the influence of intoxicants were also reported during the operation. For media inquiries, the Cologne Police Department's Press Office can be contacted at +49 (0221) 229-1220 to -1222, via email at [email protected], or online at http://koeln.polizei.nrw.de.
The operation, led by Police Chief Director Martin Huber, who has been in his leadership position since at least August 2025, underscores the Cologne Police Department's commitment to maintaining road safety and ensuring that all road users adhere to traffic rules.
