Speculation in WNBA circles: Could teams be disregarding Chennedy Carter due to alleged bullying towards Caitlin Clark?

In the 2025 WNBA season, the question on everyone's lips is: Has Chennedy Carter played her last game stateside? The former Chicago Sky guard, the team's top scorer in the previous season, mysteriously found herself on the outs, not making the Sky's training camp roster.

Just a few days later, the shocking news dropped that Carter had inked a deal to suit up for Adelitas de Chihuahua, a top team in Mexico's Liga Nacional de Baloncesto Profesional Femenil.

Chennedy Carter, a notable figure among the WNBA masses due to a wild umwelt with Caitlin Clark that sparked a digital wildfire, may not have been the only reason WNBA teams snubbed her, though.

Chennedy Carter: A stellar athlete cursed by controversy

Crafting a buzz when she joined the WNBA in 2020 as the fourth overall pick by the Atlanta Dream, Carter even broke records as Texas A&M's highest draft selection.

In her inaugural season, she nabbed a starting spot immediately. Unfortunately, an ankle injury stole her spotlight. At her strongest, Carter held the distinction of being the youngest player to set the WNBA record for the 30-point game and was the fourth rookie in Dream history to score 25+ points in at least four games.

After two seasons, the Dream traded her to the Los Angeles Sparks. Alas, Carter couldn't find a steady groove in LA, but she shone again when she signed with the Sky in 2024. She poured in 17.5 points per game, draining 48.7% of her field-goals in 33 outings. Yet, even with this impressive run, it seemed like the end of the road for a potential WNBA future when her contract expired, leaving her a free agent just weeks before the WNBA season kicked off.

Despite a sterling professional performance in China where she claimed the Player of the Year award and posted a breathtaking average of over 32 points per game, Carter's lack of a WNBA deal left many scratching their heads.

The Stormy Side of Chennedy Carter

Rumors of trouble started brewing back in Atlanta, when Carter developed a dismal reputation for her edgy behavior. In the heart of her second season with the Dream, she made just 11 appearances due to the Dream suspending her for behavior adverse to the team.

Tales soon emerged that Carter wanted to square off against a teammate who had merely encouraged her to shape up her game demeanor.

Her stay with the Sparks was no better, as the organization let her go after playing just 24 matches due to behind-the-scenes conduct issues.

In 2023, Carter decided to take a time-out and skip the season to reflect. Forgiving the past, the Sky took a gamble on Carter and brought her aboard in 2024.

Both on and off the court, Carter continued to show the same disposition, making the Sky's already challenging environment even more problematic. She did nothing to improve her standing when she headlined the news for an off-ball hip check on Caitlin Clark—an incident the league office deemed a flagrant foul.

At 26, Chennedy Carter still has a shining basketball career ahead of her. Whether that future will unfold in the WNBA, however, remains to be seen.
