Sanju Samson's potential transfer from Rajasthan Royals (RR) to Chennai Super Kings (CSK) is currently in a state of uncertainty, with several obstacles standing in the way.
The crux of the issue lies in the conditions set by RR, who have expressed a desire for a like-for-like replacement in any potential trade. Specifically, they have asked for key CSK players such as Ravindra Jadeja or Ruturaj Gaikwad. However, CSK has firmly rejected these demands, as they are reluctant to release their first-team players.
This reluctance is not without reason. Ravichandran Ashwin, a CSK player and commentator on the situation, explained that CSK generally do not engage in player trades involving their core squad members. Moreover, because of salary cap and retention complications, RR would find it hard to gain valuable players in return if such a trade involving Samson went through.
Samson, who has played for RR for 11 years straight, has requested a trade or release ahead of IPL 2026. His decision may have been influenced by the departure of Jos Buttler from RR.
Shivam Dube, an India all-rounder, has also been brought up in discussions for a potential trade. However, CSK has made it clear that Dube is not available for trade with RR.
Despite the interest from both teams, the trade discussions between RR and CSK continue, but with no concrete progress. The probability of Samson joining CSK seems relatively low at the moment, and if no trade happens, Samson might either remain with RR or enter the auction if released.
