Canceled Due to Snow Chaos: Bundesliga Match Postponed at Allianz Arena

The much-anticipated Bundesliga home match between FC Bayern Munich and Union Berlin was scheduled for Saturday at 3:30 pm, but the heavy snowfall in Munich had other plans.

The reasons for the postponement were plentiful. For one, public transportation in the city was largely incapacitated, leaving many unsure of how they would navigate their way to the Allianz Arena. However, the danger of avalanches on the stadium's roof was one of the primary concerns.

To save the day, professional climbers were brought in to tackle the snowy issue. On Saturday, these climbers abseiled down from the roof and pushed down one mountain of snow after another. This controlled demolition of snow helped prevent avalanches from causing any catastrophic damage.

On Sunday, a helicopter was told to take to the skies, blowing off the remaining snow from the arena roof with its powerful rotor blades. The spectacle was captured on camera and quickly circulated on the internet.

The training ground at Säbener Straße proved to be an unexpected challenge. On Sunday, no training was possible due to the thick layer of snow covering all five pitches. The pitch heating system worked tirelessly to melt snow, but progress was slow.

The following day, small areas at the edge of the pitches began to thaw, thanks to the sunlight and the hard work of the pitch heating system. By Tuesday, it was hoped that the pitches would be snow-free, with FC Bayern Munich planning a public training session at 10:30 am for fans to enjoy.

However, the path to the main entrance of the Bayern headquarters was still partially closed due to the risk of roof avalanches. The avid Musiala, who was fit after tearing a muscle fiber in his left hamstring, was unable to continue his build-up training outside. Instead, he drove up in his official Audi for a session in the fitness room.

When will the Union game be rescheduled?

Union Berlin returned to their home turf in Berlin on Saturday, but due to the massive amount of snow, a quick replay on Sunday or Monday was out of the question. As of January 12, 2025,, the most likely date for the rescheduled Union game is January 24.
