education associations press for substantial financial commitments from special funds
- Special interest groups in the education sector are pressing for guaranteed funding from unique financial resources.
Hey there! The education sector's financial shortfall is staggering, according to Maike Finnern, Chairwoman of GEW. In fact, they believe the actual need could be even greater. Finnern emphasized that anything less than a substantial investment would be disastrous. The proposed 500 billion euros distribution over the next 12 years could shape the nation's destiny.
Following the Bundestag's approval, the Bundesrat also green-lit a debt-backed special fund for infrastructure last Friday. initial 100 billion euros will be allocated to the states, while a further 100 billion will be invested in climate protection.
The GEW identifies the education sector, along with the Startchancen program for underprivileged schools, as requiring the most funding, particularly for the expansion of the Digital Pact. Stefan Düll, President of the German Teachers' Association (DL), also advocated for an increase in the Digital Pact’s funds: “A doubling of funds to 10 billion by 2030 is necessary to replace outdated equipment and cover ongoing costs such as maintenance and IT support,” Düll told RND.
Susanne Lin-Klitzing, the Federal Chairwoman of the German Association of Teachers (DPhV), also echoed the sentiment. "A sizable chunk of the money needs to be set aside for education to ensure the sustainability of Germany. This special fund presents a historic opportunity for this," said Klitzing.
