Chancellor Merz Holds Steady on Russia: Coalition United Against SPD's Peace Push

SPD's proposal concerning Russia met with rejection by Merz.

Chancellor Friedrich Merz vehemently opposes the calls for diplomatic rapprochement with Russia, as some SPD members propose in their "manifesto." Merz maintains the unity of the black-red coalition in their assessment of the ongoing conflict and stance towards Russia.

Speaking at a meeting with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen in Berlin, Merz asserted, "We remain united in our evaluation of the war being waged by Russia against Ukraine, and the consequences that should ensue." He further emphasized the unity of the federal government, comprising of CDU, CSU, and SPD.

In the face of recent Russian attacks on Ukraine, Merz deemed Russia a threat to the entire alliance, and reiterated the need for increased defense spending at the forthcoming NATO summit in The Hague. Frederiksen echoed this sentiment, stating that negotiations with Moscow have been ongoing, and it is time for a firm stance against Russia.

SPD's Peace Manifesto Meets Criticism

Several prominent SPD politicians have voiced criticism towards the current security and defense policy of the black-red federal government, as well as their party leadership. The "manifesto" proposed by these leaders calls for direct diplomatic talks with Russia, among other demands. The list of signatories includes former faction leader Rolf Mützenich, former party leader Norbert Walter-Borjans, foreign policy expert Ralf Stegner, and various members of the Bundestag and state parliaments.

18th Sanctions Package Awaits Adoption

Regarding the proposed 18th sanctions package against Russia by the EU Commission, Merz is optimistic about its adoption following discussions amongst EU member states. Despite Slovakia's initial resistance, the chancellor remains hopeful that it will be adopted next week, with the Committee of Permanent Representatives set to discuss the sanctions package in Brussels in the coming week.

Merz believes that the proposed measures will be a necessary and decisive response to Russia's aggression against Ukraine.

Additional Insights

According to a recent analysis, Merz and the coalition government have prioritized strengthening defense, NATO solidarity, and support for Ukraine over diplomatic rapprochement with Russia. This stance is shown in their increased financial and military support to Ukraine, as well as the introduction of advanced defense initiatives. However, it is essential to note that a minority within the SPD has continued to advocate for more dialogue with Russia, although these efforts have occurred as private initiatives rather than official government policy.

  1. The employment policies of the black-red coalition, including those of Chancellor Friedrich Merz, prioritize defense, NATO solidarity, and support for Ukraine over diplomatic negotiations with Russia, as demonstrated by increased financial and military aid to Ukraine and the implementation of advanced defense initiatives.
  2. Despite calls for direct diplomatic talks with Russia from some members of the SPD, the ongoing war-and-conflicts, policy-and-legislation, and politics surrounding Russia's aggression against Ukraine necessitate a firm stance, as advocated by Chancellor Merz and supported by other EU members, including Denmark, in the face of recent attacks and the proposed 18th sanctions package against Russia by the EU Commission.
