SPD's Martina Förster-Teutenberg Elected Mayor of Lünen
Martina Förster-Teutenberg (SPD) has been elected as the new mayor of Lünen, securing 52.3% of the votes in the runoff election held on September 28, 2025. Her opponent, Christian Klicki (CDU), received 47.7% of the votes. This election saw a higher turnout than the previous municipal election in 2020, with 51.5% of voters casting their ballots.
The election results reflected a close race between the two main candidates. In the first round, Förster-Teutenberg received 39.98% of the votes, followed by Klicki with 36.94%. Andreas Dahlke (GFL) came in third with 24.08%. The runoff was necessary as no candidate achieved the required absolute majority. The AfD finished third in the election with 17.68% and 8 seats, followed by the GFL with 10.5% and 5 seats, and the Greens with 6.47% and 3 seats.
In the city council election, the SPD emerged as the strongest faction with 27.11% of the votes, securing 12 seats. The CDU also secured 12 seats with 25.0% of the votes. Other parties represented in the council include Vision for Lünen (4.56%/2 seats), Die Linke (4.18%/2 seats), the FDP (2.08%/1 seat), and the BSW (2.05%/1 seat).
Martina Förster-Teutenberg's victory marks a significant change in Lünen's leadership. Her win, along with the strong showing of the SPD in the city council election, indicates a shift in the political landscape of the city. The higher voter turnout also suggests an increased engagement of the citizens in the democratic process.
