SPD unveils Ministerial Collective
Breaking News: An Almost Entirely New SPD Cabinet Takes Shape
Berlin – The Social Democrats (SPD) are forming a coalition with the Union with a nearly fresh cabinet, only Defense Minister Boris Pistorius keeps his position as per the list released on Monday. Former Bundestag President Baerbel Bas takes over the Labor Minister role, while Vice-Fraction Leader Verena Hubertz becomes the Housing Minister. Shocking appointments include Carsten Schneider as the new Environment Minister and Stefanie Hubig, the current Rhineland-Palatinate Education Minister, as Federal Justice Minister. Reem Alabali-Radovan, who was formerly the Integration and Anti-Racism Commissioner, will now oversee Development Aid, replacing Svenja Schulze.
The notable omission from the new cabinet, Saskia Esken, was not without reason. As co-leader of the SPD following a historic electoral defeat, Esken faced accusations of lacking leadership potential. Internal critics, mostly from the party's youth wing, pushed for a fresh direction and viewed continued prominence of figures like Esken as counterproductive to renewal efforts.
Factional tensions within the SPD also played a role in Esken's exclusion. While SPD Women’s Working Group leader Maria Noichl spoke highly of Esken's accomplishments, other party factions resisted her inclusion in frontline roles. There were whispers of offering Esken the development ministry, the cabinet's smallest portfolio, as a compromise. However, this seems to have either been rejected or overlooked.
The reshuffle of leadership prioritized experienced operators like Pistorius (retained as defense minister) and General Secretary Lars Klingbeil himself (who now takes on the roles of Vice Chancellor and Finance Minister). The push to highlight economic competence through Klingbeil's debt-driven spending plans led to a preference for long-standing figures over maintaining left-wing figureheads.
Esken's political future within her own state party appears to have been written off before cabinet selections. Reports suggest party leaders deliberately downplayed her visibility to avoid energizing internal critics. The SPD aims to project a renovated image post-election setback.
