Regarding demands for a programmatic shift, Klingbeil warned against making the SPD more extreme or pushing it further to the left. He argued that social democracy must once again lead the way in centrist politics. Klingbeil stressed that the new federal government won't neglect assessing the SPD's electoral defeat. He called for an "honest, open, and ruthless discussion" within the SPD on how to rebuild the party, which will be a significant theme at the federal party congress in June.
Election of Duisburg Leaders
Moreover, board elections were held in Duisburg, with federal MP Achim Post and Duisburger state parliament member Sarah Philipp re-elected as co-chairs. Both have been the first leadership duo in the SPD's strongest state chapter (approximately 86,000 members since August 2023) since taking office.
Philipp, the 42-year-old economic geographer and deputy faction leader in the state parliament, received nearly identical results with 88.8% support in this round of elections. Post, an academician at the age of 66, received 82.3% of the 418 valid votes (2023: around 92%) in the regular board elections.
