"Absolutely Not Acceptable" - SPD Members Slam Party Chief Klingbeil in North Rhine-Westphalia

SPD scrutinizes party leader scrutinously

Rumblings of discord have surfaced at the grassroots level of the SPD, particularly in North Rhine-Westphalia, where party chief Lars Klingbeil faced a storm of criticism during his first appearance at a party conference post federal government commencement.

At the State Party Conference for the North Rhine-Westphalian SPD in Duisburg, young delegates voiced their displeasure with Klingbeil, accusing him of being aimless in his political pursuits and of hoarding offices, while punishing his co-chairwoman, Saskia Esken, during a heated discussion.

In his introductory speech at the "blue-collar city," Klingbeil appealed for unity and solidarity, admitting his own mistakes but not naming any glaring errors that seemed to grate on the party base.

In Duisburg, a city that has historically been the heartland of social democracy, the party chief's comments were met with skepticism by a critical state association, which had previously scrutinized the SPD's decline in the federal election.

Nina Gaedike, chairman of the Jusos in North Rhine-Westphalia, took the floor first, questioningly asking how many "last shots" remained before demanding Klingbeil present a plan to reverse the longstanding SPD downturn. Delegates felt that Klingbeil had merely "sidestepped all controversies."

Call for "New Faces"

The criticism against Klingbeil escalated in the Ruhr area. Delegates criticized the fact that, despite the election debacle, Klingbeil had quickly accumulated more roles, while Esken had to bear the brunt of the party's failure alone.

One delegate voiced her frustration, stating, "It's unacceptable what happened there, that again the women are taking the hit, and the men are getting the top job." Another person disparaged the conference motto "From everyday life into the future." "If we're honest and if we continue like this, then we won't make it into this future anymore."

The call for a core renovation of the party is growing, and that means "new faces at the top of the party" instead of "positional shuffling." The leadership seems to be "quietly tolerating ridicule and mockery" aimed at a fellow party member, a young comrade said to Klingbeil. She demanded that the "dear Lars" bear the responsibility for the election result.

Unyielding Defense

Following the criticism, Klingbeil defended himself by stating that personnel decisions within the SPD were made jointly by the leadership team, also emphasizing that open discussions were imperative but should not veer into personal attacks.

Klingsbeil stated that he would not advocate radicalizing the SPD or shifting it further to the left. Instead, he believes social democracy must make stronger politics for the center.

Klingbeil assured the audience that the examination of the SPD's election catastrophe would not be overshadowed by the start of the new federal government. He reiterated that there would be an "honest, open, and candid discussion" about regaining the party's strength during the Federal Party Conference in June.
