SPD scrutinizes party leader intensely

In the heart of the SPD's traditional stronghold, their party chief, Lars Klingbeil, found himself in the crosshairs of delegates demanding change and accountability. At the state party conference in Duisburg, young activists raised their voices, slamming Klingbeil for programmatic ambiguity and self-serving advancement.

Klingbeil - now also federal finance minister - swiftly accumulated more offices after the election debacle, while Saskia Esken, his co-chairwoman, carried the brunt of the defeat alone. A frustrated delegate bluntly remarked, "That's unacceptable what's been going on here, that the women are taking the hit again and the men are getting the top job."

The Duisburg conference attendees had already delivered a biting analysis of the SPD's dwindling presence in the federal election. Klingbeil's speech - aimed at unity and solidarity - was met with skepticism, with one delegate declaring, "In North Rhine-Westphalia, we look each other in the eye openly and honestly and then tell each other the truth."

Juso state chairwoman, Nina Gaedike, called for fresh perspectives, asking "How many last shots are there actually?" and urging Klingbeil to unveil his plan of action. Another delegate pointed to the party's long-standing decline and argued that anyone unwilling to take responsibility for the election result has lost their moral compass.

In response, Klingbeil defended the collective leadership decisions and reassured the party of his commitment to an honest and open discussion about rebuilding the SPD. However, the delegates' demands for programmatic shifts and "new faces at the party leadership" echoed throughout the conference, calling for more than just procedural changes.

Meanwhile, board elections crowned Achim Post and Sarah Philipp as chairpersons, marking their continued leadership of the state association with around 86,000 members. The results were overwhelming, with both leaders earning over 80% of the votes.
