A Fresh Face in Rhineland-Palatinate's Education Ministry

SPD Parliament Member Transitions into Role of Education Minister - SPD parliamentarian and educator secures position as minister of education.

Hey there! Our new Minister of Education in Rhineland-Palatinate is none other than Sven Teuber, a rising star in the SPD. He's taking over from Stefanie Hubig (SPD), who's now the Federal Minister of Justice in the black-red coalition in Berlin.

Alexander Schweitzer (SPD), Rhineland-Palatinate's Minister President, praises Hubig's work as "sustainable and nationally influential". Sven Teuber will be appointed and sworn in next Wednesday.

A Man of Practice

Teuber is a high school teacher turned politician, bringing real-world experience to the education ministry. He's a dad, too, so he understands the pressures of juggling family life and work, common in our diverse educational landscape.

A Strong Advocate for Equal Opportunities

Teuber is known as a Champion for educational justice, the promising pillar of social democracy. His familiarity with municipal matters makes him an asset, as he's been a Trier city council member for years.

His tenure will last roughly a year before a new state parliament election in March 2026. Born and raised in Lower Saxony, Teuber studied political science and German studies in Trier. He’s a father to two kiddos.

Focus Areas

On the agenda for Teuber's politics: reliable kindergartens, the Startchancen program, and digitization. The Startchancen program, Hubig's brainchild, helps promote socially disadvantaged children and youth.

Regarding pay for teachers at primary schools, Teuber doesn't expect an increase before the 2026 state election. Education unions have called for all teachers to receive at least A13 salary, but Teuber points out a lack of budgeted funds for this in the 2025/2026 state budget.

Criticism and Praise

Teuber doesn't share the criticism of the GEW trade union regarding the Kindergarten law of Hubig's predecessor. The GEW, however, believes that the Kindergarten Act needs a radical revision, and they support Teuber as an "experienced education expert". They also support stronger legal and personal security for inclusive education, strategic anchoring of digitization, and effective combat of the teacher shortage.

The VBE, the Association of Education and Education, is looking forward to working with Teuber. They highlight previous constructive discussions and addressing important education policy challenges, such as starting salaries for teachers and improvements to inclusion and support school regulations.
