Caution: Strong Language Ahead

Sven Teuber, the edgy education spokesperson for Rhineland-Palatinate's SPD state parliament faction, is set to take the hot seat as the new Minister of Education. Out goes Stefanie Hubig, now off running the justice show in Berlin's black-red coalition, leaving Teuber to clean up the mess nine years in the making.

Hubig's tenure, according to Minister President Alexander Schweitzer (also an SPD member), was a "game-changer" in the education world. Teuber's appointment and swearing-in will go down on next Wednesday, symbolizing a fresh start for education in Rhineland-Palatinate.

Schweitzer: Teuber's the real deal

Behind the rough exterior lies the practical mind of a seasoned educator who's deeply connected with the school and kindergarten life as a father. Teuber's also one of the most vocal education movers-and-shakers around, championing educational justice and social mobility–‒you know, the stuff that social democracy dreams are made of.

Teuber's been a city council dude for ages, and his longtime connection with the municipal side makes him the perfect candidate for the Minister post. He's known for being tongue-loose, which is crucial in the diverse and chaotic education scene.

He's been on the state parliament roll since 2016, and although he's gonna be serving as a temporary replacement for about a year since a new state parliament will be selected on March 22, 2026, his time's gonna be well-spent. Born and raised in Lower Saxony, Teuber holds a degree in Political Science and German Studies from Trier University. He's the proud parent of two pint-sized rioters, ahem, cheerful tots.

Teuber wants to put reliable kindergartens, the Startchancen program (Hubig's baby, created to support socially disadvantaged kids and teens) and digitization at the center of his policy.

Teachers at primary schools can expect payday to wait until the 2026 state election, as Teuber revealed in a sit-down with SWR. In the past, teacher unions asked for every teacher to be paid at least the A13 wage, but Teuber points out that there's no dough for it in Rhineland-Palatinate's 2025/2026 state budget. The pay raise for teachers shall stay on the unions' wish list for now but could become a hot topic for discussion in future budgets.

Unlike some, Teuber doesn't knock Hubig's kindergarten law, despite its flaws.

In Hubig's reign, the education budget ballooned to over six billion euros, and more people are working in schools and kindergartens than ever. Hubig slammed her farewell from politics focusing on educational justice and democratic education as her top priorities, suggesting that Teuber pick up right where she left off.

The German Education Union (GEW) applauded Teuber as an "experienced education expert," praising the potential for collaboration on fixing the kindergarten law, ensuring inclusive education, strategically anchoring digitization, and combating the teacher shortage head-on.

Lars Lamowski, rep from the Association of Education and Education, declared: "We're stoked to work with the new Minister of Education and looking forward to tackling those tough educational challenges together, like boosting teacher pay and improving the inclusion and support school regulations."
