Newcomer Sarah Shakil Vies for City Council in Bergisch Gladbach

Sarah Shakil, a resident of Bergisch Gladbach since the age of seven, has thrown her hat into the political ring by running for the city council. Shakil, who joined the SPD in February 2021, is a candidate for the local election taking place in the city.

Born to an international family with her father from Pakistan and her mother from Turkey, Shakil hails from a low-income background. This upbringing has instilled in her a strong advocacy for social inclusion and a desire to ensure that children, youth, seniors, and single parents are not overlooked in social policy.

Shakil's focus in politics is on social justice and equal opportunities. She is fighting for a solidarity-based society where the interests of children and youth are taken seriously. Her motivations for entering politics are rooted in her desire to make a contribution and to ensure that everyone in Bergisch Gladbach has the same chances, regardless of their origin, gender, or status.

Shakil's campaign for the city council is not limited to her own district. She is also running for a seat on the integration council, further demonstrating her commitment to creating a more inclusive and equitable society in Bergisch Gladbach.

Shakil's entry into politics was prompted by the withdrawal of the previous candidate for Moitzfeld. Seizing the opportunity, she discussed her involvement with party members and eventually became a candidate for the city council.

One unique aspect of Shakil's campaign is her use of an artificial intelligence chatbot to answer questions about the election. This innovative approach underscores her willingness to engage with technology and to make politics more accessible to a wider audience, particularly the youth.

Shakil is no stranger to working in the community. In addition to her full-time job as an economic lawyer, she is also involved with Bono-Direct Aid. Her involvement in this organisation further demonstrates her commitment to making a positive impact in the lives of others.

Running in the CDU stronghold of Moitzfeld will undoubtedly be a challenging endeavour for Shakil. However, she remains undeterred and is looking forward to the opportunity to engage with the community and make a difference in the lives of its residents.
