"Germany's Military Dilemma: Voluntary or Conscripted Service?"
SPD holds off on discussing compulsory military service for the present moment
Germany's military is in need of a significant expansion to meet NATO's expectations, with Defense Minister Pistorius requiring an additional 60,000 soldiers. This raise a contentious question: Is conscription back on the table?
While SPD parliamentary group leader Matthias Miersch doesn't rule out the possibility, he is keen on holding off discussions for the time being. "Our coalition agreement is clear – we're betting on voluntarism," Miersch stated in the "New Osnabruecker Zeitung."
In a different tact, the Bundestag's military ombudsman and parliamentary ombudsman for the armed forces, Henning Otte, hinted that mandatory military service might need to make a comeback. "I'll keep that on file for future review this year," Otte shared in the ARD "Tagesthemen."
André Wüstner, Bundeswehr Association chief, adds weight to the argument for conscription, voicing the need to make voluntary service more appealing and doubting the feasibility of achieving the required numbers solely via voluntary recruitment.
Matthias Miersch emphasizes the key issue: "We need to ensure the service is attractive." Recent investments made by Defense Minister Boris Pistorius in the voluntary increase of troops will determine real-world results, Miersch shared.
Not everyone is jumping on the voluntary recruitment bandwagon. CDU politician Thomas Röwekamp, Chair of the Defense Committee in the German Bundestag, advocates for a general service obligation for men and women. He argues that it will not only intensify Germany's defense capability but also foster social cohesion.[1][2][3][4]

The Commission, in the context of policy-and-legislation and general news, has also been asked to submit a proposal for a regulation on the introduction of a new type of protection against the effects of the use of chemical weapons. The ongoing debate about Germany's military expansion and the potential reintroduction of conscription is a topic of significant politics interest.
